Help, I have acne!

Acne is a common skin condition that requires a multifaceted treatment approach including skincare, makeup and nutrition. It is estimated that up to 85% of Australians will experience acne at some stage throughout life and approximately 5% experiencing severe cases. Acne can affect self esteem and emotional wellbeing which is why we are passionate about providing a treatment approach to reduce the severity and occurence of acne, allowing you to get on and enjoy your life.

“Beautiful skin requires commitment, not a miracle”

What is acne?

Acne vulgaris is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles block with sebum (oil) and dead skin cells. It can be a problem with excess sebum production and/or a blockage interrupting the flow of sebum. Once a blockage occurs it can lead to increased P. acnes bacteria due to the bacteria using sebum as its fuel, this results in inflammation and the formation of pus. Acne can present as whiteheads, blackheads, papules (these look red and sit under the skin), pustules (pus has broken through the skin and presents as a head) and cysts.

What is sebum?

A waxy substance that protects the skin to keep the skin waterproof, which is kind of essential! However, excess sebum production can lead to oily skin and scalp and build up in the glands.

Acne treatment is individual and our therapists at Earth and Skin provide bespoke treatments and plans after the client’s skin is assessed. The treatment that worked for your best friend, may not work for you and finding a therapist that understands there are different types of acne and how to treat each type is paramount to healthy skin.

What causes acne?

Acne is a multifactorial condition that can be due to an hormonal imbalance, excessive oil production, inflammatory diet, stress, overloaded liver, gut health and poor choices of skincare and makeup. It may sound like you need to be a detective to figure out what the cause of your acne is, well you do and you don’t, with our Clean Skin Package we have taken the guesswork out of it and we are your personal skin detectives.

How do I treat and prevent acne?

Acne treatment requires a holistic approach including what is put on the skin (the outside in approach) and what we consume (the inside out approach).

Understanding your skin type is step one, that’s right, not every case of acne should be treated the same, a mistake that is often made. Every skin type will require different skin care and skin treatments.  It was once thought that to ensure you had high quality skin care, the brand should be well known with a high price tag and often marketed as “luxury”, however this approach is outdated and ineffective for treating skin conditions.

Chemical free skin care and makeup is an essential component of acne free skin. The marketing game is strong in the “natural” skin care world, we have trained therapists that see straight through the marketing and will guide you on which brands and products are the best for your skin. And of course, nourishing the body from the inside out, including the right nutrition for healthy skin is the main building block to support healing and reduce acne occurrence.

Our toxin-free solution to acne

The team at Earth and Skin acknowledged that successfully treating acne required more than a cookie-cutter approach. Every person, lifestyle and skin type is different and what works for one person might not be the best solution for someone else. After working closely with numerous clients and having excellent results, we have found there is a clear way to improve your skin from acneic to glowing.

Get yourself a Professional and Personal Support Team

Professional advice, tailored to the individual, will always produce more successful results. Personal guides and mentors can assess your skin type and lifestyle and dietary contributors to then provide education and support whilst on your skin healing journey.

Get Regular Professional Facials

Regular bespoke facials utilising toxin free skin care supports the skin to heal and rebuild from acne whilst preventing future outbreaks by the reduction of oil production, bacteria and inflammation. By keeping your facials regular, you can prevent any problems before they occur.

Know how to look after your skin in-between facials

We all know that feeling of walking out of a beautiful facial and skin is glowing, hydrated and refreshed. But then what happens? Ensuring you have the correct skin care to use in between treatments is a key to ongoing acne free skin. Professional guidance and experts in toxin free skin care are essential in this step to avoid finding yourself in a retail space with little guidance attempting to decipher ingredients that don’t make sense and wade through clever marketing.

Creating your At Home Skin Care Plan

So you have the product, now what do you do? Should you exfoliate every day? Do I moisturise at night? There is no right and wrong answer, it depends on every skin presentation. This is where professional support is here to hold your hand again and devise an at home skin care plan for you so the thinking is done, you simply follow the instructions and enjoy the experience.

You are What You Eat…Literally.

The body is continually rebuilding day in day out and the food that is consumed will either support a healthy body or not. Skin conditions including acne can be linked to poor gut health and ineffective detoxification pathways, diet is a factor in the health of the gut and the ability of the body to detoxify.

Nutrition for Glowing Skin

Do you know that you need certain fats in the diet for healthy skin? Do you know why water is essential for healthy skin? Or do you know why eating yellow and orange vegetables supports healthy skin? We understand that the world of nutrition can be an overwhelming place, one blog says this, one blog says that, science says this but hang on the same science says that, I mean really who has time to work out the truth? A nutritionist, that’s who does. A qualified nutritionist can wade through the information and guide you in what to eat for glowing skin.

Additional Treatments in Acne Reduction

LED light therapy facial

LED Light Therapy reaches where our hands can’t. Using Blue light therapy has shown to have an anti-microbial effect on the skin reducing P. acnes and is a successful addition to skin treatments. Light-emitting diode (LED) therapy is a non-invasive, pain-free, rejuvenating treatment for the skin with no post-treatment downtime. This treatment stimulates the skin cells to regenerate and repair without resorting to harsh treatments traditionally associated with acne therapies. Skin Needling

Also known as microneedling, both of which are collagen induction therapy or simply skin rejuvenation. An effective treatment for acne scarring, however this treatment should not be used when acne is active. You can read more about skin needling here

Enzyme peels

Enzyme peels are a wonderful way of achieving the results of a standard peel without chemical exposure. They are effective and with zero downtime encouraging the skin’s natural chemical reactions to occur renewing the skin cells.

Extractions

Extractions are customised to each client and there are some conditions where extractions are not recommended. There is an art to successful extractions and we don’t recommend attempting these at home if you wish to avoid scarring or acne exacerbation.
