Did you know your body loses magnesium more in summer?
We usually associate magnesium depletion with sore muscles, aches and headaches especially when we are training or working out. However, you could be depleted of magnesium even if you aren’t working out.
We asked our therapist Laura who is also a qualified naturopath all about the importance of magnesium in Summer.
What is magnesium and why do I need it?
Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is used by over 300 enzymes for numerous body processes. It plays a key role in maintaining healthy muscles, nerves and bones. Magnesium is also involved with regulating blood sugar, promoting normal blood pressure, supporting the immune system, maintaining energy production, healthy sleep, supporting the nervous system and relaxing muscles.
Why is it important in the summer heat?
Magnesium can become depleted for a multitude of reasons including stress, exercise & illness. Magnesium, being an electrolyte, is also lost when we sweat. Therefore, we often see Magnesium deplete faster during summer due to the heat (or indulging too much in the silly season). Therefore, you may notice increased muscle soreness, tension, cramping, headaches, stress and sleep disturbances during these times.
Some great foods high in Magnesium include:
- Avocado
- Dark chocolate
- Dates
- Nuts
- Salmon
- Leafy greens
- Quinoa & spelt grains
Do I need to buy a bunch of supplements to help with this?
Not at all.
Something fantastic about Magnesium is its ability to be absorbed via the skin for uptake & use by the body. Studies have actually shown transdermal (through the skin) absorption of magnesium to be as effective as oral supplementation & uptake at boosting magnesium levels.
We love using Magnesium oil sprays as an add on to our massages to reduce muscle pain and inflammation, enhance tissue recovery and ease cramps & tightness. Our new magnesium salt bath soaks are an easy at home way to boost magnesium to support the muscular & nervous system and can be added to a beautiful, relaxing bathtub for foot bath.
When is the best time to supplement magnesium?
Taking Magnesium supplementation following a massage can provide increased anti-inflammatory, pain relief & muscle relaxing benefits that will improve treatment outcomes and prolong relaxation of the muscles and nervous system.
Taking magnesium 30 minutes before bedtime can help you get and stay asleep.
What are the best magnesium products?
Our favourite picks are our house-made bath soaks made from epsom salts and other extracts that can be absorbed into your body whilst you enjoy your relaxing bath.
To have the spa experience at home, after your massage purchase a Raw Medicine Calm and Relax Magnesium Oil Spray which is designed for easy and rapid absorption. It’s effective not only in correcting any magnesium imbalance you may be experiencing but also allows the nervous system to return to its natural and relaxed state of being.
