The Northern Territory is certainly a popular holiday destination in this pandemic world and we’re all looking for that family holiday close to home.
But be prepared! The Northern Territory is dry dry dry…
So dry that when the global pandemic hit, hundreds of aircraft made their way to Alice Springs to be stored in the dry weather preventing any damage to these expensive machines that would usually be caused by other climates humidity. You can see them all lined up on the tarmac as you fly in.
My family (me, two kids and hubby plus his parents and my mum and partner) travelled from Alice to Uluru in motorhomes, staying at camping grounds and seeing the incredible sights the NT has to offer.
Landing in Alice Springs you can feel the dry as soon as you leave the airport.
By day two I’d noticed how dry my hands were. My knuckles felt rough to the touch. My kids lips were starting to chafe. Add to that the nice hot showers we were having to counteract the cold and our skin was drying out big time.
My skin got used to the dry weather after a few days but protecting it in the beginning was key!
Luckily I came prepared!
Here are my tips for surviving the dryness of the Northern Territory.
Protection
Barrier cream for everyone in the family. Slap it on everyone’s lips and anywhere else your skin is dry. My knuckles and the sides of my nose got it too.
Product recommendations:
Willow by the Sea – Naked Cream or Nipple Balm (yes the nipple balm is an amazing lip balm! If you think of the skin on our lips its very similar to our nipples)
Ere Perez – papaya SOS marmalade
Oils for moisture
It’s cold! I slathered oil on my skin straight out of the shower while my skin was still damp. I prefer oils to moisturisers because they are easier to apply and absorb quicker. More time for fun stuff!
Product Recommendations:
Vanessa Megan Bio-Omega Body Oil – Apply to damp skin straight out of the shower
Clemence Repair Face Serum Oil – Apply to damp skin. A Fast absorbing, organic super serum! Highlighted by rosehip, calendula and jojoba oils to promote skin repair and renewal, this serum will leave skin feeling nourished and rejuvenated.
Still Slip, Slop Slap
Even in winter, you need sun protection! Don’t forget your SPF. Even though it might be freezing this time of year, the sun still packs a punch and can dry your skin even further so make sure everyone in the family applies sun protection daily. The last thing you want is sunburn to deal with.
Product recommendations: The Kind Sunscreen – nourishing formula and safe for the whole family
As soon as we landed back in Queensland we all commented on the humidity. You can just feel it!
This family holiday is definitely in my top five. Seeing Uluru was a more spiritual experience than I had imagined. The kids were happy and our blended families got on well. There was adventure, sightseeing, good food (if you search for it), relaxation and education.
What more could you hope for on an Australian family holiday?
