Once you know what chemicals lurk within our everyday beauty items… it’s almost impossible to ‘unknown’ it. Whilst it can be really overwhelming starting your low-tox and organic skincare journey, it’s one of the best decisions you can make for the safety of your family and your health.
We’ve put together a quick, easy and extremely useful guide for you to help you ditch and make the switch!
1. Deodorant
Have you ever seen something on the ingredients list that just doesn’t feel right? That’s how we feel everytime we see “aluminum salts” on the back of a deodorant can or bottle.
Aluminum salts (also could be displayed on the label as aluminum chloride, aluminum zirconium or aluminum hydroxy bromide) is used to seal the sweat gland and prevent moisture from excreting out of your armpits. This daily spray provides these toxic chemicals a one-way ticket into our blood and lymphatic system.
Switch to: Black Chicken Axilla Deodorant Paste
2. Toner
A refreshing spritz of toner not only is extremely beneficial for your skin and is a great asset in your routine, but is always beautifully aromatic. Many toners boast scents of rose, aloe vera and cucumber… but is that scent safe? Not always.
Fragrance (parfum) is lurking in almost everything, including your toner. You can learn more about fragrance and why you should avoid it at all costs here.
Switch to: Clemence Rose Biome Spritz
3. Sunscreen
Chemical Filters are the most commonly found in the sunscreens on the market. They contain two or more of the following active ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate.
Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide and create a physical barrier on your skin which blocks the sun’s rays.
Switch to: Day Protect or The Kind Sunscreen
4. Mascara
There’s some serious nasties lurking in a product you put on your eyes everyday. Ingredients such as lead, phenoxyethanol and parabens are commonly found in not only mascara but eyeshadows and eyeliners.
Switch to: Eye of Horus Black Goddess Mascara
5. Lipstick
I’m putting what on my lips!? When the FDA conducted a study in 2009, lead was found in all lipsticks. What’s even more disturbing is that the amount that was in them exceeded their guidelines by about 10 times.
Switch to: Ere Perez Olive Oil Lipsticks
6. Cleanser
Many cleansers are made with a foaming cleansing agent known as Ethanolamines (also known as DEA, TEA, MEA or ETA for short). It’s a super nasty ingredient that can cause harm when applied topically on the skin.
We know that we all need different types of cleansers depending on our age and skin type, but we all need ones that are safe to use.
Switch to: Your preferred cleanser from Vanessa Megan, Clemence Organics or Mukti Organics.
7. Blush
Some ingredients you will find on your beautiful blush palette are far from pretty. Large corporation makeup brands use toxic chemicals such as talc and phenoxyethanol in their blush as well as the use of animal derived ingredients.
Switch to: Lily Lolo Pressed Blush (currently 50% off)
8. Body Moisturiser
As we know, our skin is the pathway to our vital organs, bloodstream and lymphatic systems so it’s so important to only moisturize with a safe, toxin free alternative.
Switch to: Coconut Body Milk Eco Tan
