His and hers skincare: Top beauty products for couples to share

When it comes to grooming, there are skincare basics men can – and should – beg, borrow or steal from their partner.

Historically, the fairer sex has commanded more bathroom shelf space than her male counterpart.

But given that blokes have coarser skin, larger pores and have to contend with shaving regularly, their skin deserves just as much TLC.

And male grooming is poised to become big business, with the men’s skincare products market tipped to grow to $25 billion by 2027, according to a report by Grand View Research.

According to another study, seven out of 10 men admit to using their female partner’s beauty products.

Chris Hemsworth and David Beckham are among high-profile men who have ‘fessed up to raiding their wives’ beauty cabinets.

So which skincare products should men borrow from the female in their life?

Cleanser

Given their higher testosterone levels — which lead to more pore-clogging oil production — cleansing is key for men to avoid blackheads and pimples.

“Cleansing is the foundation of any good skincare regimen,” says Sia Hendry, founder of cosmetic skin clinic You By Sia.

“And for men, it’s especially important as they sweat more and have larger pores than us ladies.”

Facial mask

“In addition to being good for the skin, face masks can be really fun — especially when shared with a loved one,” says dermal clinician James Vivian.

“Helping to correct imbalances in the skin, gel-based masks are great for hydration, while clay-based ones work to absorb excess oil.”

Moisturiser with SPF

When it comes to the absolute skincare essentials, moisturiser and sunscreen are it.

By using a moisturiser with a built-in SPF, you are providing hydration and protecting your skin from harmful UV rays at the same time.

“Men appreciate simplicity, so a product that’s two-in-one is right up their alley,” says The Parlour Room owner Natalie Papadopoulos.

“It’s all about ease and convenience.”

Lip balm

A hot day in the sun or an air-conditioned office can wreak havoc on your lips.

Earth and Skin organic day spa owner Louisa Hollenberg says “no one wants to kiss lips that are dry and cracked” – which is where a having stash of lip balms comes in.

“A good tip is to apply it before you go to bed, so it can hydrate while you sleep,” says Louisa, author of Clean Skin in a Dirty World, Beautiful Skin — Toxin Free.

BB cream

Late night? Skin reliving its teenage years?

Appearance Clinic Australia Dr Diana Phan says BB cream is a combination of moisturiser, foundation and concealer – the perfect way to discreetly hide imperfections.

“BB creams are perfect for guys who want to hide blemishes, scars, or fine lines,” says the cosmetic medicine doctor.

“They can help reduce the appearance without that ‘made up’ look.”
